The Heritage Commission was formed to care for and protect over 200 structures acquired by the state of Montana in 1997, with a mission to preserve the legacy of one of the oldest and most intact gold-rush era settlements in the United States, becoming the territorial capitol in 1865. Preservation efforts were begun in the late 1940s contributing to Virginia City’s designation as a National Historic Landmark District in 1961.

All sessions utilize characteristics of a regional living laboratory, encouraging active participation, and dialogue toward developing innovations in preservation philosophy and practices. Inquiries into additional research opportunities for students and professionals are welcome and may be coordinated with the Montana Heritage Commission.
